Business Meeting Minutes
April 21, 2005

Ponderosa S.A.G.E. Fellowship
Organizational/Business Meeting
Thursday, April 21, 2005

Call to order: 7:09 p.m.

Present: Kristi Frodesen, Pat Alice, Carol Stevens, Sue Wilkin, Chioma Alozie, Donna Mass, Julie McNeil, Cheryl Colvin, Michelle Phears, and Rev. David Phears.

Visioning: Rev. David led us in a very special visioning regarding our opportunity to create the perfect environment for our church.

Approval of Minutes: Donna Mass pointed out a spelling error in last month’s minutes. Pat Alice moved that they be approved as corrected; Sue Wilkin seconded the motion and the motion passed.

Treasurer’s Report: The current balance in the PSF account, after the minister’s salary has been paid for April, is $1,672.30, $960.28 of which is from adult funds and $712.02 from the youth. We have paid for the radio show through the end of March.

Correspondence: We received donations from two sources via mail this month, one for $50 and one for $200, both from friends of Rev. David. Pat Alice wrote a letter to Bill Gates requesting a donation for our cause and received a nice declining reply. Pat has also sent letters to three of the local hospitals regarding our Community Counseling Center and received replies from two of them.

Old Business:
1. Update on Counseling Center: As you know, we have created a Memorandum Of Understanding with our collaborative partner, the High Desert Youth and Family Resource Center in Victorville. Pat Alice and Carol Stevens signed the document on behalf of the Community Counseling Center and we are ready to start up in a couple of weeks. We are waiting for some of the counseling interns to get their insurance forms and conflict of interest letters in to us. We also have several volunteers for the tutoring portion of the center. Julie moved to accept the MOU, Sue seconded the motion, and the motion passed.

2. Community Outreach. Once again this month, we agreed to consider our sponsorship of the radio show as our community outreach.

3. SAGE Meeting for May. We all agreed that the April Texas Hold ‘em SAGE meeting was a huge success. This month it was suggested we show the movie, “What the ‘Bleep’ Do I know”. We agreed to put it off a week to May 13th at a location yet to be determined. We will share a potluck at 6:00 and the movie at 6:30 – 7:00. Listen for details in upcoming announcements at church.

4. Rev. David’s Accomplishment Review. The contract renewal date for Rev. David was April 1, 2005. We have agreed to call a special meeting to make whatever modifications are deemed necessary to the existing contract as soon as we possibly can.
5. Church Location. By now most of you know we are looking for a new site for our Sunday services. Due to a State mandate, the school districts were instructed to increase their rent to groups who are using their premises. Rev. David and Chioma had a meeting with the school district and were able to obtain the month of May rent free, but we will have to find a new location by June 1st. We have several possibilities and will keep all of our partners informed and advised each week.

6. Annual Meeting. We have decided to continue with our plans for our semi- annual meeting on May 1st immediately following the service. We will address the question of whether to change the number required for a quorum from two-thirds to fifty percent, plus one. Rev. David moved that we put this amendment on our agenda and Kristi seconded it. Since this is a bylaw change, it requires a vote by the voting partners. We will also use this opportunity to open up the discussion to everyone concerning our church meeting location.

7. Pass the basket or not. A great deal of discussion centered on our custom of not passing the basket during service. Many feel that this leads to people forgetting to tithe and that maybe we should do both, that is, find a way to acknowledge and honor the process of tithing, and leave the basket where it is for those who choose to do it privately.

New Business:

1. Guest Speakers. This month we had two wonderful in-house speakers in Rev. David’s absence, Delores Williams and Donna Mass. While we all miss Rev. David, these two ladies were informative and delightful in their unique styles. Both were very well received and appreciated by the congregation as a whole, which is a validation of why we call ourselves a fellowship.

Our meeting was adjourned at 9:28 p.m. with a closing prayer by Rev. David.

Respectfully submitted by Carol Stevens
