Ponderosa SAGE Ministry – Business Meeting 4/22/04

Present: Pat Alice, Donna Mass, Kristi Frodesen, Sue Wilkin, Eric Pearson, Cindy and Steve Elliott, Cheryl Colvin, Julie and Mike McNeil, Carol Stevens, and Rev. David Phears.

Opening Prayer and visioning were given by Rev. David Phears. We briefly discussed last Sunday’s visioning process after church and all agreed it was very successful.

Review of minutes for 4/8/04: The minutes were reviewed and corrected. Steve Elliott moved that the minutes as corrected be approved. Eric Pearson seconded.

Treasurer’s Report: After expenses, our account balance is $805.15, $791.05 of which was from the adult donations and $14.10 was from the youth donations. Rev. David is paid for the month of April. We received $608 on Easter and $632 last Sunday.

Correspondence: Pat Alice read the letter we received from A Community Church for Today in Hesperia welcoming us as a new group to the spiritual community.

Old Business:
1. Radio Ministry: There will be a time change in our radio ministry from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. on Sunday mornings. Kathryn Collins asked Carol to bring up the idea of limiting the interview type of radio program to once a month and the rest of the time to allow Rev. David to speak. There was discussion around this topic. Rev. David feels that the interview format is very dynamic and sends our message through that process. Steve is making CDs of the radio interviews and will give them to Julie and Mike to duplicate them for sale. We are getting 25 commercials a week, which advertise the program as well as our service on Sunday. Eric suggested we use some of the ad time to put in some of David’s sayings and quotes. Steve believes leaving it as is for now is best as he is getting feedback from it. Steve will begin advertising Rev. David doing weddings as well. The consensus was to leave things the way they are for now and revisit this issue in about a month to see how it goes. Donna pointed out that we have access through her sister to printing material for a flyer, such as for Rev. David’s upcoming class.

2. Change in service sequence: After some discussion regarding changing the sequence, we decided to do brief announcements, story time, Namaste song, after which David will begin a meditation from the back and the children may stay or leave as they choose.

3. Dedicated Phone Line: We would like to try having a dedicated line with a live person. We will inquire as to cost. Both Steve and Eric already have a second line in their home. We would like to have the last four digits spell out SAGE.

4. Contacting New People: Rev. David has volunteers who would assist him to contact newcomers, make them feel welcome, ask if they have any needs or concerns and answer any questions they may have. We will use our sign-up sheet as a resource.

5. Outreach donation: Steve said the two women who run A Better Way where we gave our outreach donation for this month were very grateful for the gift and talked about attending service at the Ponderosa.

6. Music: It was suggested we try using Karoke and/or songs typed up, like we have with Namaste, and handing them out so we can include more music in our service. In order to incorporate this, we will have to be mindful of the time.

7. Kids Camp fundraiser: We are going to dedicate the last Sunday of each month to recycling and we will bring our stuff to church and Eric will take it. He suggests bringing only cans that have CRV on them. Donna will find out how much it costs for the kids to go to camp.

8. Church Fair fundraiser: Along these lines, we decided to have a church-wide fundraiser on June 5 from 10 am to 4 pm. We will have a bake sale, food for sale, yard sale items, face painting, and many other things. Cheryl will look into having it at the Marina School parking lot. Julie will be coordinating this event.

Status Reports
1. Youth: Discussion was had about getting Donna some help with the youth church. Eric will announce the need for this on Sunday. She is currently working on the abundance idea with the youth.

2. Property near Ponderosa: No new information on this as of this time.

3. Abundance class: We have many people already signed up for the class and expect it to be a great success. Rev. David would also like to inquire about cable access TV.

New Business:
1. Kristi Frodesen has offered to teach dance and movement, maybe art classes with Lowell, possibly to be held at Donna’s studio.

2. Visioning: Eric will put the words from last Sunday’s visioning on the web site for all to see. We would also like to incorporate the last Sunday of each month for visioning.

3. Mission and Vision Statements: We decided to dedicate a SAGE meeting to work on each of these statements. We will take what we come up with to church for those who weren’t there and ask for their feedback as well. We agreed that even once we establish them, we would need to revisit them from time to time to keep them current.

The meeting concluded at approximately 8:45 p.m.
